Another Crisis Story

Ah so here we are, home and still living, coming out of the other side of another near-miss. Tired and overwhelmed, and struggling to understand and accept this entire past week.

  3. Mystery infection... She was fine on Sunday morning, a bit grumpy at lunch time, and by evening she was in Special Care, hand swollen to more than twice its normal size, with 8 wires coming out of her, drifting out of consciousness and with a heart rate of 200bpm.

The doctor has referred to her as "a highly allergic little person" and the bacteria that caused the infection as "normal skin bacteria". It took two days for her to start to improve, and by that time her whole arm was engulfed - the swelling came right up to her shoulder before it started to go down.

I don't know how we're still here, I really don't. But we're home after a hellish week (over twenty hours of hysterical baby while they tried and tried to get IV lines in, all of which she pulled out again) and she is on the mend. Back to the hospital in a couple of days, to see if the oral meds are doing enough, and probably to get scans as well to check her joints aren't infected too. :(

  10. That's the diagnosis we've come home with, but the specialists weren't 100% convinced - I think we're as close as we'll ever get to knowing for sure!

She has looked so big recently, but now she looks so very tiny and fragile. She's such a baby, and I can't possibly make her understand that everyone is trying to help her. She looks betrayed every time I get out the antibiotics. :S

  25. Oh Sarah, I really feel for you. I am a bit like Rowan and at the age of 2 I had my first anaphyllactic shock. I know what my Mum and Dad went through and it has to be the most frightening thing as a parent. Having just found that Warren has a peanut allergy (though thankfully mild at the moment) I am starting to have the same worries myself.

It has been a really tough year for you all, it just doesn't seem fair. It would be lovely to see you when you have the strength. Warren often speaks of Morgan and Jenna - they made a real impression on him!

Love and hugs to you all.
